How to Tie an Eye Splice

August 29, 2017

Tying an eye splice is a great way to form a permanent loop at the end of a three strand rope. You can then use that loop to attach to another rope, chain or a hook.

If you're using a synthetic rope you'll need to do a minimum of 5 tucks, but if you're using natural rope you only need 3 (as demonstrated here).

For this tutorial we've started by unraveling the three strands of the rope up a ways to create three loose strands.  Then we wrapped tape around the three ends to keep them from fraying.  We color coded the three pieces of tape for easy explaining: Left end (gray), black end (center) and white end (right).

We then put a piece of tape where we stopped unraveling to prevent further unwinding. You now have a piece of rope with the three unwound strands at the end.

Next, bring the unraveled end of the rope around to create a loop to the size of your liking. Bring it around so that the tape lines up with the rope.

Once you have decided the size you want your loop you're ready to start the eye splice.

Start with the middle strand and thread it under the braid where you determined your loop to start.

Pull the strand all the way through the braid.

Now move on to the left strand (grey end). Insert it into the braid that is one above the braid you just threaded the center one through.

Pull the strand all the way through the braid.

Now on to the right strand (white end). Flip the cords over so you're looking at the "back" of your splice. Insert the right stand BELOW the braid you inserted the middle one.

Pull the strand all the way through the braid. You are now done with the first round!

Now take the middle (black) strand and go over the braid the left strand is under and then under the following braid. So you will be going over and then under.

Pull the strand all the way through the braid.

Take the left (gray) strand and go over the braid the center one is under and then under through the following braid.  You will be going over and then under just like you did with the center strand.

Pull the strand all the way through the braid.

Flip the rope over again, and take the right (white) strand and go over the braid the left one is under and then go under the following braid.  Again, you will be going over and then under just like you did with the last strand.

Pull the strand all the way through the braid. Round two is complete!

For our third and final round, we will do exactly the same sequence as the last round.

Take the middle (black) strand and go over the braid the left strand is under and then under the following braid. So you will be going over and then under.

Pull the strand all the way through the braid.

Take the left (gray) strand and go over the braid the center strand is under and then under through the following braid.  You will be going over and then under just like you did with the center strand.

Pull the strand all the way through the braid.

Flip the rope over and take the right (white) strand and go over the braid the left one is under and then under through the following braid.

Pull the strand all the way through the braid.

Congratulations! You have done three rounds.  You can repeat this process if you would like to braid further.
